his stand up is very good, he’s very witty in general though…. and there’s a youtube of him with a heckler thats priceless.
i find that both him and lee weren’t that suited to performing on television.
richard herring applied for head of bbc comedy 2 or 3 years ago but thanks to the lee&herring radio joke job applications it wasn’t even considered.
he’d be very good in a role like that.
I’m afraid I do B’Dum. Al Murray annoys me greatly. Being loud and shouty is not funny.
Although I do see that Richard Herring’s wikipedia page says “he has been described as “one of the leading hidden masters of modern British comedy” “. And the link is to his own webpage! I wonder, I wonder.
I will however check out some of his stuff on youtube, particularly the heckler one you mention.
I love Al Murray… it seems like I shouldn’t but I do.
Herring would never say that about himself, that’d be his manager or a quote from a review that’s on his site. He’s been consistently good(occasionally great) for almost 20 years now with entirely new shows every year(which is a HUGE achievement).
In other news, Dave Allen is amazing… how come I never seen him til now?
I hear ya re: Herring’s body of work. Seems he must have a new show for Edinburgh every year which is no mean feat. Most comics get jaded and just stick to the easy stuff that pays the bills. He seems to keep it updated and fresh from what I gather.
Also he once wrote a play called Ra Ra Rasputin so he can’t be all bad!
Dave Allen died a couple of years back. Was from Tallaght originally. Very interesting style of comedy, very laid back. Whiskey, fags and gags about God. I never saw him live, only re-runs and such like. A cool guy.

Poor Richard Herring, absolutely brilliant comedian… yet completely overshadowed cos he was in a double act with the best ever.

Maybe so B’D. It’s a good article althought I would love to see it epanded as a real study on comedy and the ideas process.
That said, re: Herring, I have absolutely no time for Time Gentlemen Please and Herring was writer/co-creator of that. It bugs me that show.
I’ve never seen him do stand-up tho. Is that where his brilliance lies?
